The painting by Kudjla/Gangalu artist Daniel Boyd (b.1982) that appropriates David R Horton’s Map of Aboriginal Australia, which documents over 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language groups. It is embossed with a copper scripted title ‘Treasure Island’ taken from Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure chronicle. The painting is shown as an enlargeable image. This work was exhibited as a part of the first National Indigenous Art Triennial, ‘Culture Warriors’, at the National Gallery of Australia. The work is of considerable significance for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures cross-curriculum priority. It exemplifies the way Aboriginal experiences can be viewed through historical, social and political lenses. In this case Daniel Boyd has applied an artistic lens to the context of European settlement.
